The journey of helping survivors of human rights abuses

Dr. Walter H. Nguyen -- a former refugee from Vietnam – has accumulated over 32-year

experience in the human services field, holding numerous positions, including clinical social

worker, program manager, program director, program evaluator, consultant, social work field

instructor, and executive director. His longest tenure had been 29 years as founder and executive

director of Mosaic Family Services (Mosaic). In this position, he had transformed Mosaic into a nationally known service provider for refugees, victims of domestic violence and human

trafficking.

 

Dr. Nguyen graduated with an MSW from the University of Minnesota in 1988 and a PhD in

clinical social work from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1994. As a field instructor for

social work, since 1992 he has supervised over 100 graduate interns from UT Arlington, UT

Austin, Baylor University, University of North Texas and Texas Women University.

 

Dr. Nguyen received the Distinguished Alumni Award from UTA in 2005--the highest honor

given by UTA and the Alumni Association. In 2011, Dr Nguyen was nominated by the

Honorable Representative Rafael Anchea for the Liberty Bell Award presented by Dallas County

Young Lawyers Association. The same nomination was submitted to the Texas Association of

Young Lawyers which honored him with the Liberty Bell Award in the same year.

In 2018, Dr. Nguyen was featured in the New American Economy Report as a successful AAPI

social entrepreneur. In the same year (2018), he participated in the Becoming Texans, Becoming

Americans: The Making of the Vietnamese Community of North Texas-- an oral history project

conducted by and archived at Baylor University Institute of Oral History.
